AI4EU Cafe: AI, Ethics and Human Rights - Designing a Better World

EVENTS
Mon 31 May 2021
On May 31th, 2021 at 3 pm the AI4EU Cafe will present Bernd Carsten Stahl (Professor of Critical Research in Technology and Director of the Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility at De Montfort University, Leicester, UK) with his talk on AI, Ethics and Human Rights - Designing a Better World

Abstract

The question of how ethical and human rights issues can be addressed is widely discussed. Industrialised societies face the challenge that AI-related technologies promise huge benefits but these must be balanced against their ethical, social and legal downsides. Problems that are widely discussed include algorithmic biases, data protection, security, but also wider societal problems, such as changes to employment, unequal distribution and political interference. This presentation will showcase the work undertaken in the EU project SHEPA (www.project-sherpa.eu) which investigates ethical and human rights issues in AI and big data. It highlights some of the challenges that the complex field of AI brings and the way in which these may be addressed by industry, policy, civil society and other relevant actors.
